Ibdaa Music Program

Ibdaa staff and volunteers conduct intensive music instruction courses designed to prepare students to play in Ibdaa’s Music Ensemble. The thirty boys and girls, between the ages of eight and thirteen, from Dheisheh refugee camp are learning to play instruments such as the piano, violin, guitar, kaman (Arabic violin), tabla (Arabic drum), ‘oud (Arabic guitar), and nye (Arabic flute). In addition to learning to play these six instruments, the children also take courses in singing, reading, and writing music.

Due to the high levels of emotional and psychological trauma in Palestinian refugee children, we have recently expanded our music program to include music therapy activities for a wide range of children and youth. The goal of this program is to make music a part of the daily lives of refugee children and provide opportunities for them to use the creative process inherent in musical participation to express themselves. Music therapy allows the children to explore their personal feelings, make positive changes in mood and emotional states, and have a sense of control over life through successful experiences.
